Wayzata, Maple Grove, Elk River and Minnetonka earned quarterfinal victories Tuesday in their opening matches of the boys’ tennis Class 2A state team tournament. Breck, Fergus Falls, Blake and Mound Westonka advanced in Class 1A.
The top-seeded Trojans defeated St. Cloud Tech 7-0 in a Class 2A match played at the Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota. Maple Grove took all four singles matches in a 5-2 victory over Mahtomedi. The winners play Wednesday in the semifinals.
Defending champion Elk River defeated Rochester Mayo 5-2. The Elks will play Minnetonka, which defeated Bloomington Jefferson 4-3 in the first round's closest match.
In Class 1A, Breck defeated Thief River Falls 7-0 at Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in south Minneapolis. Fergus Falls defeated Virginia 5-2. Those two teams will play Wednesday.
Blake also defeated Rochester Lourdes by a 5-2 score. The Bears will play Mound Westonka, which defeated Luverne 4-3.
Team semifinals and finals are Wednesday. The individual portion of the tournament is Thursday and Friday at the same sites.
